Laundry List

1. The central heating guy finally arrived 2 hours late on Friday. That was after I waited literally ALL DAY Thursday only to be told at 5pm that they were working on some poor soul's emergency gas leak. The leak was under their driveway so they were having to rip it up to get to the pipes. And it was pouring rain. All I have to say is: at least I don't have that problem... yet. I probably shouldn't mention it out loud so the house doesn't get any ideas. Anyway, the heating engineer turned out to be a great guy and spent about an hour going from radiator to radiator doing god knows what. He was wearing track pants so there was a lot of swishing going on.

(WHOA. You guys. I just googled "sound track pants make" - because I'm a Gen Y'er and that's just what we do. The first hit was a forum post on the ADISC website. According to their welcome page "ADISC.org is a supportive, social community for people who just happen to like wearing diapers. We also welcome their friends, and other open-minded people who are curious about this lifestyle." WHAT?!?!?! The post was about how people wear track pants to cover the sound of their diapers. I have to admit, they make a valid point.)

Oh yeah. I totally took a surreptitious picture of the heating man. What of it? You should see how many blurry pictures I have on my phone because he would turn around right as I was about to take the picture and I would be forced to throw my phone on the table and act chill. Somehow he managed to get some work done between me taking pictures of him, Sascha "bruff"-ing at him, and Plato desperately trying to show him his tennis ball. We have an appointment for Wednesday to get the Thermostatic Radiator Valves (or "TRVs") replaced on the two non-functioning radiators (or "rads"). Jeff asked me: "Would you rather have a murderer come to the house to fix the radiators (successfully) or a heating engineer (unsuccessfully)?" Normally I despise "would you rather" games but I think you know my answer to this one. As long as he didn't murder me or any person/dog I know.

2. Since I moved here, Jeff has been begging me to make him a savory pie. Steak pies are kind of a British thing, I guess. We don't eat meat though so I finally found a recipe for a mushroom pie and made it last night. It was a celebratory pie since Jeff just found out he got a 9/10 on his last actuarial exam! Way to go Jeff!

If any of you don't like mushrooms that probably looks really nasty, but we thought it was delicious. I even made the pastry part myself! Obviously, we had a ton of leftovers which are now in the "evil corner" of the fridge.

AKA the delicious corner (top left) where the blueberry bars I made Saturday are also hanging out. Between the pie and the bars I used 4 sticks of butter this weekend - hence the identifiers "evil" or "delicious" (depending on your mood).

3. I have embarked on project Clean the Damn Garage. This really should be priority #1.

My word, that is embarrassing. So far, I've made a couple trips to the recycling center/the dump and we can actually park the car in there now. That might be enough for some of you slobs, but not me. Lately, I've been perusing the Martha Stewart website drooling over pictures like this.

I have also been saying things to Jeff like "Martha says we should use chopsticks to clean mud from our boot treads. Genius!" or "Martha has a cat named Princess Peony, isn't that cute?!" to which he responds "Marrrthhaaaa.... who? Is that someone we know?" MARTHA STEWART, Jeff. Get with the program.

4. As you can see, Martha is not forced to tromp back and forth (in the rain, of course) between the washer in the house and the dryer in the garage. (Here they call it a "tumble dryer" exclusively, as in people at the appliance store will be confused if you ask where the dryers are. No imagination, I'm telling you.)

The worst part about the dryer being in the garage is I can't hear the buzzer go off. So, by the time I remember to go get the laundry, the clothes aren't warm anymore. That totally ruins the pleasure of doing laundry. There have been times I have put the dryer on for another 15 minutes, just to be able to fold warm laundry - only to forget and have to fold cold laundry anyway. Luckily, we have plenty of space to stack the washer and dryer in the laundry closet.

I bought a stacking kit and have an appointment with a Bosch technician to get that set up today. If he shows up.

That's also the closet where the evil boiler lives. This closet definitely needs some Martha in it's life.

5. Jeff and I downloaded/watched Inception last night. Man, it was good. While we waited for it to download, we checked out Pixar's Wikipedia entry to see what movies they have coming out. We were a little disappointed to find out that two of Pixar's three upcoming films are sequels: Cars 2 and Monsters, Inc. 2. There is one new one though. It is Pixar's first fairy-tale, called "Brave". Wiki says "according to Variety magazine, Princess Mérida is expected to join the Disney Princess franchise". That got us reading about the Disney Princesses: Jasmine, Snow White, Mulan, Aurora, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Tiana, Belle, Ariel, and Rapunzel. THAT reminded me of how seriously scary the wicked fairy is in Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent. Even her name is scary.

Seriously, she freaks me out. Disney movies used to be so much darker than they are now! Ultimatedisney.com ranked her the #1 Disney villain of all time, beating out Jafar, Scar, The Queen (from Snow White), Ursula, and Cruella de Vil who are also in the top 10. Now you know.

P.S. If any of you were thinking about it, absolutely DO NOT go to the ADISC website. I made the mistake of scrolling down and found this little tidbit re track pants: "they are also great if you happen to get a leaker, dry's [sic] quickly and with the dark blue almost invisable [sic] to others". It only gets worse after that. I know this may actually encourage some of you (Jeff), but I can tell you you will only find things that will make you think - I did not need to know that.
